ISRO NVS-03 launch from Sriharikota restores NavIC to four-satellite operational minimum
A GSLV-F18 lift-off on October 31 puts India's homegrown navigation network back at its minimum working strength, with a record turnaround that offers a morning-briefing win for the space sector.

ISRO launched its NVS-03 navigation satellite aboard the GSLV-F18 rocket from Sriharikota on October 31, placing it in the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. Chairman V Narayanan said the mission brings the NavIC constellation back to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites.
Why it matters: NavIC is India's own system for position, navigation and timing, giving the country independent access to those services rather than reliance on foreign networks. Narayanan described it as a strategic national asset that also serves civilian uses.
The speed of the effort stood out. Narayanan said the 2,250-kg satellite was injected precisely into its elliptical orbit, and that the gap of 56 days between successive GSLV missions is the shortest so far. The launch campaign took 47 days, and the four L40 strap-ons were readied in a record 37 days.
GSLV Project Director and Mission Director Thomas Kurian echoed those numbers, calling the mission special for the whole ISRO family. Faster turnarounds signal a launch ecosystem that is getting better at repeat, schedule-driven work, something industrial partners and investors in the space supply chain tend to watch closely.
On the technology side, NVS-03 is the third satellite in ISRO's next-generation navigation series, meant to keep services running under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. It carries an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured ones, and adds the L1 signal to the existing L5 and S-band signals. Narayanan said one of the indigenous clocks is now successfully in orbit. ISRO says coverage extends over India's landmass and about 1,500 km beyond its geopolitical boundary.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh congratulated the team on X, pointing to growing prowess in space technology and a commitment to sovereign indigenous navigation. He also credited the space reforms introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for contributing to the sector's progress.
