India, UK Launch Annual Review System for Trade Agreement Usage
New tracking mechanism will monitor how businesses utilize tariff benefits under the bilateral trade pact that took effect in July.

India and the United Kingdom have established an annual review process to monitor business utilization of their Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which came into force on July 15, 2026. The tracking system will assess how frequently companies claim preferential tariffs and gather feedback on implementation challenges.
The monitoring mechanism was announced following the 16th India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee meeting in New Delhi on October 12, 2026. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds led discussions that resulted in plans for dedicated committees, working groups, and contact points to address implementation issues.
Initial trade activity shows businesses on both sides moving quickly to leverage the agreement. Indian exporters dispatched over 50 shipments to the UK on the first day, including smartphones, machinery, gold jewelry, garments, and Joha rice from Assam. From the UK side, Scottish salmon entered India at zero tariff within two weeks, while Scotch whisky gained access to reduced import duties and vehicles began clearing customs under tariff-rate quotas.
The first assessment under the new system is scheduled for one year after the agreement's implementation. Both governments aim to identify where companies need additional support and remove barriers to accessing trade benefits. The 17th JETCO meeting is planned for 2027 in the UK.
