Streaming platforms are packing the last week of October with new titles. Between 28 and 30 October, Netflix and SonyLIV will release five shows and films across comedy, crime, family drama and horror, with Netflix carrying four of them.
The slate begins on 28 October with Dhindora Season 1 on Netflix. Bhuvan Bam's comedy first appeared on YouTube in 2021. It follows a middle-class family whose life changes when the father, Babloo, wins a ₹11 crore lottery. Bam plays several characters, and the cast includes Gayatri Bhardwaj and Jeeveshu Ahluwalia. The release is a reminder that a show built for free, ad-supported viewing can find a second life on a subscription service.
On 29 October, Vijay Sethupathi's Tamil film Baththa reaches Netflix, less than a month after its 1 October theatrical release. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and presented by Atlee, it is set in 1980s North Chennai. It follows a feared gangster whose life shifts after he meets an eight-year-old boy. Lijomol Jose and Master Sai Prithviraj co-star. Viewers can watch it in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, so the audience is not limited to Tamil speakers.
The biggest release comes on 30 October. Akka, produced by YRF Entertainment, is a gangster series set in the fictional kingdom of Pernuru in the 1980s. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani and Radhika Apte plays Rudra. Both hold power in a world built by generations of women, and their conflicting ambitions threaten the old order. Dharmaraj Shetty makes his directorial debut, and the cast includes Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anshuman Pushkar and Monica Panwar.
Netflix has two more titles on 30 October. Meethe Mein Kya Hai is a family drama set around Diwali, centred on relatives trying to reconcile. It stars Ritwik Bhowmik with Rohini Hattangadi, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Vikram Bakshi, Shivika Rishi, Ayuushman Ghai and Kanikka Kapur. Its festive setting suits a holiday-week release.
SonyLIV's entry is the Tamil film Immortal, which also arrives on 30 October. GV Prakash Kumar plays Magi, whose fascination with a neighbour, played by Kayadu Lohar, turns into a supernatural nightmare. Written and directed by Mariyappan Chinna, it blends romance, fantasy and horror. It reached cinemas on 4 September.
The lineup shows how streaming now draws on YouTube, Tamil cinema and star-led originals, and how quickly films move from theatres to home screens. Viewers get a varied week, and the platforms get a chance to hold attention going into the festive season. Source: Mint.
