IndiGo Plans to Triple A321 XLR Fleet to 10 Aircraft by March 2027
India's largest carrier is expanding its medium-haul capabilities as the aviation market matures and demand grows from smaller cities.
IndiGo is set to expand its fleet of long-range A321 XLR aircraft to nine or ten planes by the end of March 2027, up from the current four, according to the airline's Chief Strategy Officer Aloke Singh. The expansion is designed to serve medium-haul routes as India's aviation market continues its rapid growth trajectory.
Speaking at a conference organized by engine manufacturer GE Aerospace in Gurugram on Monday, Singh highlighted that the Indian market is maturing and showing greater appetite for premium travel options. The airline, which operates more than 430 aircraft in total, is responding by adding more business class seats on domestic routes and short-haul international flights.
The A321 XLR aircraft will unlock new market segments by providing non-stop service to previously unserved destinations, Singh explained. He noted that IndiGo's past experience shows that high-frequency non-stop flights to new destinations typically stimulate market growth.
Singh emphasized that India's aviation growth story is being driven by smaller Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, creating what he called an "unprecedented upside" for the industry. India's annual domestic passenger traffic reached 340 million in the fiscal year 2026, with projections suggesting it could hit 1.1 billion by 2040.
Medium-haul flights typically have durations between three and eight hours, positioning the A321 XLR aircraft as ideal for routes beyond IndiGo's existing short-haul international network where Indian carriers already have significant presence.
