Water Crisis Forces Telangana Farmers to Migrate in Search of Work

Agricultural workers across Telangana are leaving their villages for neighboring states as severe water shortages and crop failures destroy their livelihoods. The migration wave has hit districts like Gadwal and Sangareddy particularly hard, with entire families—including students and elderly residents—relocating to Karnataka and Maharashtra in search of employment.

The trend marks a reversal of recent years when Telangana farmers had hired workers from other states and previously migrated locals had returned home. Now, small landholders who cultivate one to three acres are abandoning withered cotton, chilli, castor, and groundnut crops before harvest is complete. Many are heading to rice and cotton mills in Karnataka or construction sites in Mumbai.

The severity of the crisis became evident following an October 10 accident in which three farm laborers died when a truck struck their tractor as approximately 35 villagers traveled to Karnataka for work. Local reports indicate that nearly 60 percent of residents from 160 settlements in Narayankhed constituency are migrating elsewhere.

The situation has been compounded by deficient rainfall this season, with much of the region's agriculture dependent on monsoon waters. Tenant farmers who took loans to cultivate paddy have been especially affected, forced to seek work in other states to repay debts. State government advisories discouraging crop cultivation during the upcoming season have raised concerns that migration may intensify in coming months.
