Delhi has begun barring vehicles registered outside the capital that do not meet BS-VI emission standards, with the restriction taking effect Sunday and running until January 31, 2027. Noida traffic police have issued an advisory asking motorists to check their vehicle's emission norms before driving into Delhi.
The rule is aimed at cutting vehicular emissions, a major contributor to the region's worsening air quality. BS-VI-compliant CNG and electric vehicles are not restricted, so newer and cleaner fleets can carry on as usual.
The scale of the exposure is notable for the satellite cities. Noida and Greater Noida have over 4 lakh vehicles that fall below BS-VI standards, more than half of them BS-IV, while Ghaziabad has roughly 4 lakh such vehicles. Daily commuters, transporters and businesses that depend on the Delhi corridor are likely to feel the impact.
For those headed beyond Delhi, police suggest skipping the capital altogether. The recommended route runs via the Noida Expressway or Yamuna Expressway to Zero Point, then through Pari Chowk, Kasna and Sirsa, before joining the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.
A senior traffic officer also noted that older vehicles already face limits inside Noida under existing pollution-control measures. Petrol vehicles over 15 years and diesel vehicles over 10 years are prohibited on public roads in the district, and drivers and owners will be held responsible for violations.
The practical takeaway for the morning commute: check your vehicle's BS norm, plan alternate routes, and consider public transport for essential trips, as police have urged. For the longer view, the curb adds a nudge toward cleaner fleets, which could benefit CNG and electric vehicle adoption across the NCR.
