Dissident National Conference MLAs are likely to meet party president Farooq Abdullah on Friday, November 6, to put their grievances on record after the recent cabinet reshuffle in Jammu and Kashmir, party sources said. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is also expected to attend.
The trigger was the October 27 expansion, which brought in four new ministers and took the council of ministers to nine, the maximum the statutory limit allows. With the ceiling reached, there is no room left to accommodate those who missed out, which sharpens the leadership's challenge.
Among the unhappy voices is six-time MLA Mubarak Gul of Eidgah. After his exclusion, party workers staged protests in several places. Some MLAs have already gathered informally, though what was discussed has not been made public.
According to party sources, the disgruntled legislators have also raised organisational and administrative concerns with senior leaders and asked for a formal hearing. That suggests the complaints go beyond individual berths to questions of how the party and government are run.
The National Conference has publicly downplayed talk of a rebellion or any outside political threat. It describes the MLAs' meeting as a routine social lunch ahead of the Darbar move, the seasonal shifting of government offices.
Why it matters: a ruling party that keeps its legislators united gives a government room to focus on delivery and stability. A face-to-face session with the party patriarch is a classic way to settle differences before they harden, and its outcome will show how the leadership balances a capped cabinet against ambitious senior members.
