The ruling NDA alliance led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has won a commanding result in Andhra Pradesh's MPTC and ZPTC elections, with counting on Saturday showing the Telugu Desam Party far ahead and gains in territory long held by the YSRCP.
According to available figures, the TDP won 5,879 MPTC seats, Jana Sena 811 and the BJP 151. The YSRCP secured 1,469 and others 246. In the ZPTC contests, the TDP had won 337 seats and led in 47 more, Jana Sena led in 61 and the BJP in 18. The YSRCP had won 36 and led in 11.
The symbolism was strongest in Kadapa, the home district of former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. The TDP took the Pulivendula ZPTC seat by 1,463 votes and Mydukur by 18,903, and captured the Kadapa Zilla Parishad. The alliance also won 64 of 65 MPTC seats in the Pulivendula Assembly segment. The YSRCP did hold Vempalli and Vemula ZPTC seats.
Elsewhere, Jana Sena's Pamidipati Srinivasa Rao posted the biggest margin, winning Krosuru in Palnadu by 30,273 votes. In Bondapalli, TDP's Pashala Neeraja beat Anusha, daughter of Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Botsa Satyanarayana, by 5,136 votes.
Some races were razor-thin. A BJP candidate won the Golugonda MPTC seat by two votes, while TDP candidates won in Thamminapatnam in Nellore and Penumantra in West Godavari by a single vote each.
The mood was not uniformly calm. The YSRCP sought recounts or certificates in places including Korukonda, Nandyal, Nellore and Nagari, alleging officials withheld or wrongly declared results. A dispute also arose in Anakapalli, where the alliance sought a recount after a 17-vote YSRCP win. Tension at several counting centres tempered the NDA's celebrations.
For political watchers, local body results indicate how far the alliance's grassroots machine extends. Control of mandal and district councils matters for the delivery of rural funds and schemes, a point of interest for investors tracking state-level policy continuity.
