Thomas Tuchel has left Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke out of his 25-man England squad for the Nations League games against Croatia and Spain, a call confirmed on Friday morning. The omissions signal that reputation alone will not secure a place in his group.
Palmer's absence was widely expected after he withdrew from two earlier camps. According to the source report, he pulled out through injury in September, and Chelsea cited load management in October. Chelsea told the FA this week that he was fit and available, but Tuchel went with the players who had already been in camp.
Tuchel stressed it was not personal. He said the squad already has enough number 10s, that those in camp built trust over a long stint together, and that new attacker Josh King can cover all four forward positions. In his view, camp time is the chance to impress, and Palmer has missed too many of those chances.
Madueke's exclusion is the bigger surprise. With Bukayo Saka out through a quadriceps injury, the right flank looked open, and Madueke has scored for Arsenal against Nottingham Forest and Slavia Prague. Tuchel called it a close call but chose to stay loyal to the group from the last international window.
Think of it like a company that promotes the team that shipped the last project rather than the star who was on leave. For fans and the sport's commercial ecosystem alike, the message is that availability is now a currency. For Madueke, staying at Arsenal means more minutes to build a case, and the door is not shut for either player.
