Delhi Traffic Police checked 7,279 vehicles between midnight and 8 pm on November 1 under Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) restrictions, turning back 714 and impounding 38. The force said ten vehicles were also challaned in the same period.
On Sunday, the department held a coordination meeting with police officials from neighbouring districts to make sure the rules are applied consistently at the capital's borders. It is also running awareness efforts through print, social media and radio, with information boards at entry points and pamphlets handed out to drivers.
The push builds on an October 25 virtual meeting chaired by Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Officials from Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, Sonipat and Bahadurgarh joined, alongside Delhi Traffic Police and Transport Department staff. The agenda covered easing congestion at the borders, checking polluting vehicles and keeping non-compliant buses out of the city.
Traffic police told that meeting that more than 10,000 challans for traffic and pollution violations are issued every day. Authorities also discussed action against overage petrol and diesel vehicles, and routing trucks not destined for Delhi onto the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways.
Buses in Delhi-NCR must run on electricity, CNG or BS-VI-compliant diesel. The government plans more mechanical road sweeping, water sprinkling and dust control, with extra enforcement teams as restrictions tighten.
Why it matters for the morning commute: the Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage 1 of GRAP across Delhi-NCR on October 21 after air quality worsened. Border checks, cleaner buses and smoother freight diversions affect transporters, commuters and logistics firms alike. The minister stressed that results depend on joint effort between Delhi and its NCR neighbours.
