Manik Saha Opens Tripura Nursing Complex, Pledges Health Push in Remote and Urban Areas
Tripura's chief minister inaugurated a combined nursing campus in Durjoynagar and laid the foundation for a new primary health centre, framing the moves as a broader overhaul of state health services.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday inaugurated a newly built three-storey complex in Durjoynagar that houses the Agartala Government Nursing College, the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Nursing School and an ANM Training Institute under one roof. He also laid the foundation stone for a new building at the Narsingar Primary Health Centre. The nursing complex cost Rs 8.44 crore.
Saha argued that health is a basic need and that a healthy population is the foundation of a healthy society. He said the state aims to deliver government health services to everyone, including children, older residents and economically weaker households, in both remote and urban districts. The government, he said, is upgrading primary health centres in remote areas while also expanding services at district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals and the main referral hospital.
The chief minister pointed to specific capacity gains. He said bed numbers in district hospitals across the state have risen significantly and that outpatient services have been widened at every health facility. He also cited plans to modernise main referral hospitals and to set up dental, eye, homoeopathic and Ayurvedic colleges and hospitals, and noted that an eye hospital has already opened.
The workforce angle is where the announcement carries the most weight for the region. Saha said 550 MBBS seats have been added in the state across government and private institutions, and that nursing education has been expanded. For a state that has long struggled to keep trained clinical staff in its hill and border districts, consolidating nursing and ANM training in one campus is a practical step, since these cadres staff the frontline of primary care.
Saha also acknowledged that Tripura's health system had gaps in the past and said the current government is working through a planned schedule, with an emphasis on completing infrastructure work transparently and on time. Officials present at the event included Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, the Director of Health Services Dr. Debashree Debbarma and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar.
The speech stopped short of announcing new budget figures or completion dates for the Narsingar project, so the test will be delivery. Still, the combination of a finished training campus, a primary care building under construction and a stated expansion of medical seats gives residents a clearer picture of where state health investment is heading.
