BNP Paribas Q3 Net Profit Rises 13.9% on Trading Strength; Shares Stay Flat

BNP Paribas reported third-quarter 2026 revenue up 9.5% from a year earlier, with operating income climbing 17.9% and net profit rising 13.9%. The French lender credited stronger trading, steady commercial banking and tighter cost control for the result, and it said it is on course to beat its 2026 goals.

The standout was corporate and institutional banking, where revenue rose about 17%. Global markets led the way with revenue up 22%, and equities and prime services jumped 55%. For the first time in the quarter, the bank said its equities-linked business earned more than its fixed income business, a shift that points to healthier client activity across its franchise.

Retail-facing divisions grew more slowly. Commercial and personal banking revenue rose about 4%, helped by a supportive interest-rate backdrop and stable deposits that pay no interest. Investment, protection and services added around 5%, with the integration of AXA Investment Managers adding to momentum.

Vehicle leasing unit Arval remained the weak spot. Falling used-car prices and higher fuel costs, particularly for petrol and diesel vehicles, kept pressure on the business. Management said the unit now has the scale it needs after the Athlon acquisition and is being run with tighter discipline.

The efficiency picture also improved. The cost-to-income ratio stood at 59% for the first nine months, more than 200 basis points lower, and cost of risk held steady at 39 basis points. The bank has delivered 540 million euros of cost savings so far this year and expects to reach its 700 million euro target.

Capital returns are the next big signal. BNP Paribas plans a 1.3 billion euro share buyback starting Monday, roughly 10% of full-year results, and its core capital ratio sits at 12.9% after a 15 basis point hit from the Athlon deal. Management also said it expects double-digit annual earnings growth through 2028, with its next strategic plan due in February.

Despite the strong numbers, the shares traded around $152.54, within a 52-week range of $144.67 to $169.15. The stock rose about 4.55% over the past week but is still down roughly 2.5% this year, and the market has been valuing the bank at a P/E of about 7.56. For investors tracking European banks, the gap between earnings momentum and share price is the story to watch as the buyback begins. Read the full earnings call transcript on Investing.com.
